They gave RFS-81 the NAS-81 they'd taken so long ago from outside the Dark Savant's tower, and Salva soldered a few wires and the android's instruction. They tested it by having it recite data from its relevant databanks: of interest was its data on the Rapax, with whom it seemed that the Dark Savant might forge an alliance.
They took RFS along; he didn't require any equipment, and proved valuable in ensuing fights with more giant wasps; 14 came along soon after they'd fixed him, and they were grateful for the shelter of the hut, which allowed them to control the battle. Another 20 wasps later as they explored the area and suddenly it didn't seem so hard to kill them after all.
As they wandered through the rocky mountainsides they came to a trapped pathway, just before which they had found a lever cunningly disguised as a rock.
Moving the rock didn't do anything to the trap, but did open a concealed door in the rock face, which led to a control room occupied by a slimy, four-armed cross between an insect and a slug that called itself Tantris T'Rang. He was friendly enough, and expressed his happiness at meeting them, but said that before they spoke further they should go to see Z'Ant at Marten's Bluff. The room had another exit on the other side of the trap, which they avoided. At the end of the narrow cleft of rock they came to a hut which enclosed a railhead. The tracks led deep into the mountains, it seemed, and a number of levers operated points on the railway. They got into a cart and took the brake off. As it rolled ominously into the mine shaft, they wondered whether this had really been a good idea.
Three exhilarating trips later, each of which had come out at different points on the mountain, and they were thrilled.
They went back for more, trying another combination of points, and the whizz through underground waterfalls and over a lava pit went on for some time...
They came out at a rocky ledge, where they found a giant silver nugget, remains of the mining operations. The shiny boulder excited them all, so they shared Quentin's load between them and he carried it on his back. That much silver had to be worth a lot!
They eventually came to a tunnel entrance, and given the option between it and a long drop to their deaths, they entered, coming to a a grille over a sewer. A few millipedes and a locked hatch later and they were in lower Marten's Bluff. Patrolling T'Rang were fighting some unpleasant-looking insects that resembled armoured scorpions, and the friends helped them out. This earned them some hisses and the T'Rang slithered away, which suited the friends, who investigated the side rooms in the area, finding some more millipedes and some more loot to pilfer and sell, including a flamethrower, another mana stone and an oscillator, which Salva grabbed happily.
They followed the passageway to some steps, which led to upper Marten's Bluff.
An amulet of healing lay in one of the crates at the top of the stairs, and just around a corner they met 5 rebel spirits, whose powerful mental magic sent everyone to sleep, except Margreet and RFS, who went unconscious and aggressive respectively. As RFS held off the spirits, whose punches lacked much power, Quentin awoke, and his spellcasting took revenge on the spirits, who lost their focus on RFS. RFS killed them in turn with methodical precision. In one room off this central corridor they saw a hinged pot, which Salva again kept, and a pitfall trap, which they avoided. Some more stairs down to the other side of lower Marten's Bluff brought them to two teleporters: one only seemed to accept incoming T'Rang, who were very small, and the other was broken, flashing between four places at speed and, presumably, pulverising the stream of mindless young T'Rang who slithered into it.
Walking on brought them to a trapdoor in the ceiling, out of which they emerged into a thin strip of land between the fortress of Marten's Bluff and a cliff face; presumably a wall of rock through which they had come via the mine tunnels. Some bats, dung beetles and more scorpion-like creatures (called deathstinger apuses) later, they came to a catapult parked by the walls of the old fortress. It was next to a barred metal gate, but they couldn't make it budge, so they continued waling around, between the walls and the moat, and came to the front entrance of Marten's Bluff.
